ABOUT DR. CHUA

Dr T P Chua graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, now part of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. He obtained first class honours in the intercalated BSc programme and graduated with the MBBS degree in 1987.

HE PASSED THE MRCP EXAMINATIONS AT FIRST ATTEMPT

…after which he took up cardiology specialty training in various London teaching hospitals including St Bartholomew’s, Royal Free, Royal Brompton and National Heart and Hammersmith hospitals. He was also a British Heart Foundation Research Fellow researching into heart failure. Accredited as a specialist in the United Kingdom both in general medicine and cardiology, his special interests include interventional cardiology (balloon angioplasty and stenting), heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation and pacing.

HE HAS ALSO WRITTEN AND PUBLISHED EXTENSIVELY IN MEDICAL JOURNALS

…on topics including ischaemic heart disease and chronic heart failure. He was the first to show the abnormal ventilatory response to exercise in chronic heart failure patients to be a prognostic marker for the disease, linked to increased chemoreceptor activity.

DR CHUA PERFORMS BOTH ELECTIVE AND EMERGENCY CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY & STENTING

…at St George’s Hospital, London and Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey. Angioplasty and stenting, otherwise known as percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI in short, is widely used to unblock coronary arteries. Emergency primary PCI is a life-saving procedure used to unblock coronary arteries in patients who are having a heart attack.

Dr Chua’s private practice is based at the Nuffield and Mount Alvernia Hospitals in Guildford, and at St Anthony’s Hospital, North Cheam.

HE WORKS AS AN NHS CONSULTANT AT THE ROYAL SURREY COUNTY HOSPITAL

…in Guildford, at St George’s Hospital, London, and also at Frimley Park Hospital, Frimley. At the Royal Surrey County Hospital Dr Chua has been closely involved in the development of cardiology services and he was the Clinical Director from 2009 for 6 years. He established the on-site cardiac catheterisation laboratory, heart failure and EP services, cardiopulmonary exercise (CPEX) testing, as well as primary PCI services for acute heart attacks in conjunction with Frimley Park Hospital. He is the President of the Guildford and Godalming branch of the British Heart Foundation.
